15 PACKING TIPS

Step-by step help when packing yourself and getting ready to move home.

If you find it all a bit daunting you can take advantage of our Full Packing Service or Fragile Only Packing Service.

1 –     Have a good clear-out of unwanted belongings, wardrobe, loft, basement and garage before the move.

By far this is the biggest and most arduous task but it is also the most rewarding and will reduce the amount you have to move, quite considerably in some cases.

It’s not only most rewarding to you but consider giving your unwanted items to charity, such as homeless charities, single parents charities, Army veterans help or offering to free-cycle social media pages.  Something you have no use for may help someone get back on their feet.

2 –     The general rule of thumb on packing is if it can fit into a box or bag then it should be packed – but obviously NOT pets 🙂

We know it sounds simple, but if you use this simple rule then you can’t go wrong.

3 –     When making up a box, fold the small flaps in first and then the large flaps, tape with three strips.

Fill the box so it is flat when taped shut.

4 –     Using a marker pen, clearly label the top of each box, with a brief description of contents and the destination room.  Fragile boxes

          must also be clearly marked.

Make sure you write on the cardboard NOT on the tape where it may wear off.

5 –     Use pillows or anything soft in the boxes to add protection to your fragile belongings.

6 –     If you don’t have the Original boxes for packing glass shelving, flat screens and some electronic equipment, use a bubble wrap

alternative like a shredded cardboard mesh weave.

As of Summer 2021  Chelmsford Removals stopped using non-recyclable materials, such as bubble wrap,  in their packing materials.  We invested in a specialist machine we imported from Italy that recycles old cardboard boxes into a shredded cardboard mesh weave, this protects fragile and precious items and can also be used as void material.

7 –     When packing china and glass use the wrapping paper we provide.  Only use bubble wrap alternative such as our shredded

cardboard mesh weave, on the very delicate items.

Always pack glasses upright and plates on their side.  Pictures over two foot (60cm), in size will be treated as a piece of furniture so there is no need to wrap them in a bubble wrap alternative or  cardboard mesh weave, unless it is a canvas.  Oil paintings should not be bubble wrapped as they can sweat.

8 –    Use small boxes for books, LPs and wine as these are very heavy.

9 –     Dried flowers or house plants that don’t fit into a box can be packed with the top open.

10 –   A sturdy chest of drawers can be left full, with soft items such as clothes inside.

11 –   Clothing that needs to stay hanging up can be left and it will be transferred into our portable wardrobe boxes.

These will be placed inside the vehicle and unpacked directly into your wardrobes at the other end.  Please make sure that the clothing

          cannot slip off the hangers.

12 –   Use your suitcases to pack clothing and shoes.  Linen, washing and clothes that are not ironed should be packed into black or

          recycling bags.

13 –   When disassembling items keep screws, nuts and bolts in a box that is easy to find.

Or why not ask about our disassembling and reassembling service to make life easier?

14 –   Tape garden tools together in bundles of three.

15 –   Leave packing your frozen and refrigerated food until the very end (use a cool box or bag if available).
